Virginia and I have visited Mexico many times. This is the journal of our most recent trip, in July
2004. On that trip we focused on the cities of Oaxaca (pronounced "Oahaca") and Puebla.
We flew from New York to Mexico City and there boarded a 270 mile (450km) connecting flight to
the city of Oaxaca, a city we had never been to before. . After visiting Oaxaca we traveled 250
miles (420 km) by bus to Puebla, where we remained a few days. From Puebla we took a two-hour
bus ride directly to the Mexico City airport for our flight home.
On the map below you will find Mexico City near the upper left corner, Oaxaca at the lower
right-hand corner, and Puebla at the upper center. The map shows distances in kilometers (about
0.6 miles). On the map you can also see near Oaxaca other places we visited in that area:
Monte Alban, Mitla, Tlacolula, and El Tule.
Both Oaxaca and Puebla are interesting cities with a great deal of colonial architecture and many
cultural attractions. Oaxaca is experiencing serious economic and political troubles, while Puebla
enjoys relative prosperity based on greater industrialization and its proximity to Mexico City.
