Khajuraho is an isolated village with poor road connections, far from any railway, and
generally does not appear on maps of India. More than a thousand years ago it was the
capital of the Chandela empire and an important artistic and religious center. Khajuraho
today has 25 magnificent temples in an excellent state of preservation, a World Heritage
Site.
The Khajuraho large temple exteriors are covered by sculptured statuary in beautiful
compositions depicting gods, goddesses, musicians, dancers etc., as well as the erotic
scenes for which these temples are famous. The interiors of the temples generally consist
of one or two fairly small rooms.
Most of our first day in Khajuraho was enjoyed among and within the beautifully
sculptured temples. A wonderful experience! Below is a small sample of what we saw.
In the late afternoon we visited we made a brief visit to a residential area of Khajurahu,
poor like more than five hundred million Indians.
Then in the evening we went to a tourist show presenting what was said to be folk dances
from various parts of India.
End of a great day in Khajuraho. Next morning the bus took us to the Khajuraho
airstrip for our one-hour flight to Varanasi
