Shortly after our flight from the USA arrived in Kuala Lumpur we boarded a
connecting flight of about an hour to Kuching, the capital and largest city in the
state of Sarawak, on the north coast of the island of Borneo.
In the Kuching Hilton Hotel we were glad to get a room on the tenth floor with a large
picture window offering a beautiful view of downtown Kuching with its landscaped
riverfront promenade/park, the Sarawak River with boats docked along the shoreline, small
passenger ferries crossing back and forth, and an occasional fishing boat chugging along.

Our arrival day in Kuching was used mainly to recover from our long trip. However, from the hotel
we took walks downtown and along the parklike riverfront promenade.
The following morning we went on a city bus tour. The tour included a visit to the Sarawak
Museum, devoted principally to the history and culture of Sarawak, the state of which Kuching is
the capital. Another visit was to a very high modern elevator-equipped lookout tower offering
excellent views of the city. We also walked into a public library where we saw many persons
there reading, writing reports, using computers, on the internet, etc.
