Lithuanian/Latvian Border & Rundale Palace
|
Lithuanian/Latvian Border: We reached the Lithuanian/Latvian border in the early
afternoon. A Latvian immigration agent boarded our bus and collected all the passports of
our tour group and took the passports into the Latvian immigration building. While our bus
was parked we entered a small building with a bank to change some of our money into Latvian
currency. To our surprise, there was nobody in the bank's office, About twenty minutes
later the immigration official came to our bus and returned our passports to us.
Rundale Palace: About an hour after crossing into Latvia our bus made a small detour to
Rundale Palace. Rundale Palace looked like a smaller version of the Palace in Versailles. We
were guided through many of the rooms, all with fine furniture, large mirrors, beautiful
paintings on the walls and ceilings, etc. The Palace was designed by the architect who
created the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. Rundale Palace was built for a nobleman
who ran the local fiefdom for the king of Poland. Rundale Palace was well worth visiting.
