In addition to travel we have enjoyed boating, swimming, hiking, camping,  educational
courses, movies, the internet, and keeping in contact with family and friends.  We read much
and share a wide range of interests including geography, history, sociology, biography, and
fiction.
Who We Are
We, Eric Caldeira and Virginia Caldeira, are a retired couple who for many years lived in
the New York City area but recently moved to a Philadelphia suburb.

We usually travel abroad about three times a year, averaging three to four weeks per trip,
most often going where the backpackers go, but staying in small hotels and guest houses.  On
most trips we travel independently, but occasionally join tour groups .  In addition to
English we both speak Spanish and have learned a few key words in other languages.  I also
speak German, Virginia some French.  We love to travel!
Creating and developing "Our Travel Journals" website has been a pleasure.  We hope you
enjoy it.  We look forward to adding new travel adventures.
Our earlier trips were European,  but now we travel mainly in Asia and Latin America.  We
have slept in about 75 countries, shown in red on the map below.
When preparing to go to a new destination we try to learn much about it from the Lonely
Planet, Footprints, Moon, and other guidebooks, as well as from other publications and the
internet.  Our pre-trip reservations usually are only for flights from  the United States to
the first foreign airport and return, and the first night's hotel or guest house.

Virginia was born and grew up in New York, was an honor graduate from Hunter College
(now the New York City University), where she majored in mathematics and statistics.  In
addition to doing most of the work of raising our four children she worked as a statistician,
mathematics teacher, and computer systems analyst.

I, Eric, spent my childhood in South America and Germany, my adolescence in Texas, and
later lived mainly in the New York area except for about one year in the Philippines and
another with Virginia in Mexico.  I  graduated from Columbia University with a liberal arts
education.  Before retirement my working life was devoted to marketing American products
abroad; that work required extensive international travel.
